All About Autumn: Our Garden Update

I don’t know about you, but fall happens to be my favorite season. The smells, sights, tastes, sounds and weather are so full of surprises and so much different from summer’s! I love drinking hot tea, hot chocolate or chai tea lattes on a brisk morning; sledding on colorful, crunchy leaves; feeling the cold air enter my nostrils; celebrating the holidays (including my birthday ;))….

…I also love fall vegetables. Funny that these are usually eaten during the summer…kale, carrots, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, potatoes, lettuce…however, these are all actually grown during the autumn season!

Pictured here (left to right) is fennel, russian kale, dino kale
and red lettuce (this is only 1/3 of that field, by the way!)

Because they grow kind of slow, these plants are seeded in the late summer. I seeded my carrots the first week of September, and they’ve a bit of growing to do. ONE little carrot stuck its shoulders out before the rest, though :) I saw it today. SEE???

I picked it a bit too early, but I was SO excited to see the tip of orange color I couldn’t help it! I’ve waited so patiently for these babies to grow…

And oh wow…if only y’all could smell the baby carrot. It’s the best smelling carrot I’ve ever encountered. It literally made me tear up to inhale its sweet, earthy aroma! I said a little prayer to thank God for the little things like carrots…oh, isn’t His creation just lovely?

Me and our first baby carrot!

If you’ve wondered about our kale, it’s growing slowly but surely also.

Should be ready to harvest in a few weeks!

(Edit:  we didn’t end up harvesting it til April! See post here.)

On other note, I made biscuits and cookies this morning, request of the husband (the cookies were a surprise :) ). The biscuits were my Mom’s recipe – only I used water instead of milk and added garlic powder, dried parsley and dried rosemary. The cookie recipe was off the back of the brown sugar bag. Best oatmeal raisin cookies ever!

  1. Ginger Spice Cookies! When I was 4 my mom asked me what I wanted for Christmas breakfast and told me that I could pick whatever I wanted. I told her I wanted gingerbread cookies and hot cocoa. It became a family tradition, even now when we’re all grown! It just means Christmas and holidays to me.

  2. Although it’s over done, anything pumkin is basically my favorite. And anything that comes in a pie. Does blackberry pie count as fall? Oh, and don’t forget a good pot of chili on a cold day. :)

    • Michelle, guess what! I’ve recently made pumpkin bagels, thanks to the Spiffy Cookie. Will post pictures, soon! When they are more perfected, I shall even bring you some :)

Yes! I do think pies count as a fall food. I love berry pies the most, too. Cobalt and I made a 3 berry pie as our “cake topper” and it was by far the best one I’ve ever had. I’ve meant to write a post about it, but have yet to do so. Perhaps I will soon!

Mmm… I agree…chili is a perfect soup to chase the chill away!

      Thanks so much for sharing!
