Homemade Pizza Pockets: Simple, Fun, Tasty and Kid Friendly!

This afternoon I was at the grocery store buying a few things and almost bought a pizza.  When telling my husband this, he says enthusiastically,  “Can you go back and get one?!!”  I said with a smile that I’d see what ingredients we have and try to make one.  When he suggested calzones, I wholeheartedly agreed. :)

When I used to live at home, Mom would make pizza pockets with all sorts of fillings. Chicken, spinach, Alfredo sauce, cheese…or pepperoni, marinara sauce, cheese, green peppers…and they were always made from scratch!

For this recipe, I used a basic pizza crust found on allrecipes.com. It took about 30 minutes total to make (maybe longer since I was watching Netflix while baking ;) ). I added garlic powder and dried herbs to the dough for some extra flavor. While bread flour works the best, I used a mix of whole wheat and all-purpose flours and it was perfect! I also added flaxseed for an extra nutrition boost.

Fillings I used:

  • Pizza Sauce – ~$1/can
  • Diced red onion – $2/bag at Aldi
  • Mozzarella Cheese – $2.60/2-cup bag at Aldi

These were all the pizza ingredients I had, but you can use whatever you want. :) It’s super fun to let kids pick out their own fillings and help you fill the dough with goodness!

How I made them:

  1. After mixing up the dough, I divided them into 4 pieces and flattened them (with my hand) into a circle.
  2. Placed each on a greased cookie sheet.
  3. Filled each with 2 tsp sauce, a sprinkle of onions and 1-2 TBS of cheese. They fill up SUPER fast, so don’t add too much!!
  4. Folded dough in half (half-moon) and rolled up the sides tightly.
  5. In a 350F oven, I baked the pockets for 20ish minutes – until they were puffy, bubbly and brown. (The last 5 or 10 minutes were at 400F.)

Analysis

These were so good!! I added too much sugar (I read it wrong on the recipe), so the sweetness kinda threw off the taste. But the crispy texture and hot fillings were perfect. Definitely going to make this again sometime! When we have kids and teach them how to cook, this will be a perfect one for them, too! They can choose whatever ingredients they want to put in their own pizza pocket and then they can watch it cook in the oven window!

Three cheers for yet another cheap recipe that is deliciously healthy!
